Killed by Math
It’s time for Kyoko and Misako to pull on their best ass-kicking sneakers, as WayForward has announced that RPG/brawler River City Girls will be making its debut on new-gen platforms later this morning. The cartoonish head-buster will launch on PS5 January 18, and best of all, PS4 players will be able to bag the upgrade free-of-charge.
So, what can the mighty PS5 bring to the modest world of River City? Well, admittedly there’s not a whole lot of extra gubbins on offer. River City Girls is, after all, a game that relishes the aesthetic style of the old-school Kunio-kun franchise. The PS5 port will, however, support Activity Functionality and will also incorporate DualSense features, so at least you’ll be able to feel the impact of each and every Stone Cold Stunner and room-clearing Dab Strike.
Originally released in the summer of 2019 (yes, it’s already been that long…) River City Girls is the tale of two anarchic and excitable school girls who, after receiving some sinister text messages, embark upon a two-woman scrap through the streets, docks, arcades, beaches, and hotels of their comic-book ‘berg. Featuring gorgeous sprite work, passionate adherence to franchise lore, bone-breaking combat, and a wicked soundtrack from Megan McDuffee, River City Girls is a very worthy entry in the long-running Kunio-kun franchise, and a bar-raiser for the brawler genre.
River City Girls is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The PS5 edition will launch January 18. A sequel, River City Girls 2, is headed to PC and consoles this coming summer.
Get ready to rumble! The digital PS5 version of River City Girls is planned to arrive in North America and Europe on Jan. 18!
