Chronicle Books is now accepting pre-orders for Rob Smith’s Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts. You may remember Smith from his job as editor-in-chief of the PlayStation: The Official Magazine. Rogue Leaders is a massive book that not only details the history of LucasArts’ videogames, but also includes “more than 300 pieces of concept art, character development sketches and storyboards.”
It’s undoubtedly a unique book that should shed some light on the schizophrenic nature of LucasArts in regards to their videogames. It should also be an interesting journey into the creative motivation, breaks, cancellations, and victories of their games –which is something that is still rarely explored.
I filled out my pre-order for the book, but I’m a loser for this kind of stuff. LucasArts’ earlier stuff like Secret of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion solidified my love for the videogame medium and ultimately inspired me to seek out other equally engrossing titles. I’m excited to learn what was behind these games.

[Update: Originally, I said PlayStation: The Official Magazine was “now-defunct.” This is far from true. I was thinking of Ziff Davis’ Official PlayStation Magazine, which is the magazine that has gone in the tank.]
