Rumor: Respawn’s game to be Xbox-only and always-online

The latest word on what could be one of the first big next-gen multiplayer titles

Respawn Entertainment, the studio formed by ex-Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella, hasn’t had much of anything to show for its debut game. Ahead of this year’s E3 in June, which is likely when the reveal will take place, sources have relayed some rather interesting info about the game to Kotaku. Namely, it’s said to be an Xbox exclusive (possibly Xbox 360 as well as the next Xbox) and will be always-online.

The Electronic Arts-published title, reportedly a multiplayer sci-fi shooter in which teams of soldiers and pilotable exoskeletons clash, reportedly runs on a modified version of the Source engine. Whether or not the game even has a single-player component was not made clear by the outlet’s sources, but if it doesn’t, that would make it easier for Respawn and EA to get through the inevitable always-on backlash.

Microsoft working out an exclusive like this amid talk of the next Xbox allowing publishers to require a constant internet connection for games sounds almost depressingly believable. It also sounds to me like the game itself will be interesting, conceptually — I hope it doesn’t get overshadowed by stuff like this.
