A new rumor is floating around the Internet that promises we’ll be seeing the first hints of DSi-exclusive retail games very soon. According to a report from Kotaku, these games will only work on the DSi and will come in their own specially branded packaging, marking them as distinct from DS games that work on any system.
This has been something of an inevitability ever since it was announced. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was feared to be DSi-only when it launched, and there is a game in the works called Ghostwire that will require the DSi’s camera in order to function. Those who decided to hold on to their DS and DS Lite devices will be locked out of the fun when these new games roll around.
So far, Nintendo is allowing the third parties to take the reins when it comes to DSi-exclusive titles. Despite what was said about Spirit Tracks, Nintendo has not yet officially announced that any of its first party games would require a DSi to work. I’m guessing Nintendo is using third parties to see how it works out, and if the numbers are good, you can expect to see Zelda and Mario go DSi-exclusive.
