Sacred 2 will have a legal game sharing method, pirates confused and frustrated

CDV Software is trying something absolutely brilliant in regards to DRM. Today, the company sent out a press release saying that anyone who wants to try out the full version of Sacred 2 can. The kink is that the prospective player will need to grab a buddy’s disc and the access only lasts 24 hours. Despite the minimal amount of time, CDV is hoping that allowing players to legally share the game will curb potential piracy.

CDV director of marketing and PR Mario Kroll recently told MTV Multiplayer that they’re intention “is not to build Fort Knox (and thus surely irritating paying, legitimate customers), but instead to offer a sensible sharing solution…” Kroll goes on to say that while the title will assuredly be cracked and shared illegally, the majority of would-be thieves will “do the right thing and reciprocate” CDV’s friendly DRM approach by paying for the game.

While I’m more than happy that CDV is going for something less restrictive, I think they missed on the fact that if a pirate enjoys a game he borrows, he’ll probably still pirate it. I understand the emotional appeal, but I’m not quite sure this will improve things. What do you guys think?
