Could we be getting a Weltall toy?
There’s something strange about a company revealing plans for merchandise of a property they might not care about. In fact, it’s weird when it’s related to a title made by a team who doesn’t work for them anymore. Honestly, this was my reaction to Square Enix’s Comic-Con ’17 announcement about releasing Xenogears action figures.
While it’s not connected to them contracting Monolith Soft to make a sequel or remake, I can settle with owning some toys of the game’s signature robots. At the moment, we only know about Junya Ishigaki (Xenogears and the Xenosaga trilogy’s Mechanical Design) being the supervisor for the figures, along with it being under Square’s Wander Arts and Bring Arts brand. That being said, I hope the final product is on par with Bandai’s Super Robot Chogokin toy line.
With 2017 being Xenogears’ 19th birthday, the first figure might launch during its 20th anniversary, which lands on 2018. Aside from feeling weirded out, this news made me remember the time when I fell in love with the game’s ability to mix religious themes with a setting where the corrupt higher-ups manipulate every part of society.
Since their sketches hint at Weltall being the first one to come out, I can’t wait to see how the final design will turn out. Depending on how it does, let’s keep our fingers crossed for toys of the other machines, along with the Omnigears. While we’re at it, they should make a Chu-Chu plushie or figure as well.
