Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut is better than the original

Now on PS4 this week

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane, shall we? Back in 2002, WayForward released the original Shantae for the Game Boy Color. It wasn’t a massive hit, but it quickly became a cult classic, and eventually lead to the release of Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare in 2010, which pretty much made Shantae a household name. Since then WayForward has released Pirate’s Curse and are prepping for Half-Genie Hero, but so far, Risky’s Revenge is my favorite entry to date.

It became so popular in fact that WayForward not only ported it to iOS but Steam as well, and now as of this week, the PS4. I took it for a spin and I have to say, it feels fantastic. All of the extras from the PC Director’s Cut are in, including the improved map, a tougher difficulty, and a better warp system, but being able to boot it up and play it on a console is a great perk. I was initially just going to test it out, but ended up nearly beating the game again. The Director’s Cut also has the option to sport 4:3, 4:3 with borders, 16:9, and the original resolution.

This is one of the best Metroidvanias in years, so if you still haven’t played it yet, the PS4 is a great option.
