Word from all over the place is that the planned PC MMORPG version of Sega’s crate moving, direction asking simulator, Shenmue, has been canceled. The game was to be set around the events of Shenmue II, featuring many characters and elements from the series.
This news shouldn’t be that disappointing to our North American readers, as the game was only announced for South Korea and China. This news also shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the game has been plagued by legal and development issues since its announcement in 2004.
Hit the jump for a proposed office scenario that may have led to the game’s cancellation.

A day in the life with the Shenmue Online development team:
YU SUZUKI: Hello, Ralph — does anyone know what happened to the coffee filters? The stuff out there is skunk.
RALPH: Oh, Yu! Coffee? No, I don’t know anything about coffee. You might want to ask Steve in accounting! I thought he mentioned something about coffee earlier today.
—
YU SUZUKI: Hey there, Steve. I was wondering if you knew where I could find some coffee filters. The stuff we have has been sitting in the pot out there since Tuesday, and I really need a kick to get me through this day.
STEVE: Yu! It’s so nice to see you! Coffee filters? Gee, Yu, I’m not sure about coffee filters. Say, have you seen my stapler?
YU: No, Steve, I haven’t. I just want some coffee.
STEVE: Sorry, Yu. Can’t help you there. Try asking Alice in HR — she loves drinking coffee!
—
YU: Hi Alice. Steve said you might know where the coffee filters went off to. I can’t seem to find them.
ALICE: Hi Yu!
YU: Yeah, hi. Coffee filters?
ALICE: Oh, I think we’re out of them. I used the last one on Thursday. You might want to try the 7-11 down the street. Do you know where that is?
YU: Yeah, it’s down the street. You just said that.
ALICE: You might want to try asking the secretary if she knows where the 7-11 is.
YU: No, that’s OK. I know where it is. Thanks, Alice.
—
YU: Uh, why is this door locked?
SECRETARY: Hello, Yu! Where are you going?
YU: To my car. I’m going to the 7-11 to get some coffee filters. We’re out. Why is this door locked?
SECRETARY: The 7-11? Oh, I haven’t been there in years! I don’t remember where the 7-11 is. You might want to ask Steve in accounting.
YU: No, it’s fine. I know where the damned 7-11 is. Please open this door.
SECRETARY: Not until you ask Steve in accounting where the 7-11 is first and you help him find his stapler.
