It’s been happening since April of this year, but hasn’t received much coverage. Some users have been buying the Move Edition of Heavy Rain, which promises four pieces of additional content (the “Taxidermist” chapter, soundtrack, theme and “making of” videos), only to find that what’s advertised on the box isn’t on the disc.
The issue was brought up on the Sony Europe boards months ago, but customers have still been shortchanged in recent weeks. A few users have been able to have their discs replaced, but here’s the kicker — they had to send the disc to Sony on their own dime, paying extra shipping to fix a problem with a game they already spent money on. That’s not exactly cool.
The Platinum version of the game appears to be the one affected. According to Sony’s customer service, extra icons ought to appear in the XMB, detailing the bonus content. On affected discs, only the game is playable, as if it were just a standard edition.
It should be noted that many of the discs seem to work fine, but there are a number out there with problems, and getting the issue fixed seems more trouble than it’s worth. Perhaps it’s all part of the artistic experience of Heavy Rain, that sense of loss and emotion. Very meta.
