The news you’ve been waiting for has arrived, (Zoey’s) top game of 2023 is arriving on PlayStation 4 (and 5) and Switch on May 15, 2024. I’m talking about Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer [sic].
There was apparently some sort of stream today that nobody told me about, but thankfully, No More Robots gave me the details after the fact. I know some people wait until the Switch release of smaller games come around so they can ignore people on their morning commute. I understand. That’s why I’m writing so enthusiastically.
Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer got the coveted Zoey Award for top-best game of 2023. Or it would have if I ranked my favorite games of last year. And also if that came with an award. A spin-off of web browser simulator, Hypnospace Outlaw, Slayers X presents itself as a mod of a ‘90s FPS made by a fictional character. It takes you back to a time when the FPS genre was new and amateurs were trying to design their dream game in engines like Duke Nukem 3D’s Build. It was an awkward adolescence of the video game industry that attracted awkward adolescents.
It winds up succeeding not only as a fun game but as a pitch-perfect throwback to the days before the Dotcom Bubble burst and Y2K devastated the world. If you grew up in that time period, it will probably suck you right back there, and if you didn’t, you could learn a thing or two, young’un.
It’s exciting both as a game and a demonstration of the video game medium’s artistic potential.
There’s also a bit of a teaser at the end of the stream that shows off the upcoming content update that will allegedly be free. I can barely contain all my jazz.
Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer [sic] is currently out on PC and Xbox Series X|S. If you don’t have those, you can grab it on PS4, PS5, or Switch on May 15, 2024. Hopefully, we can also get a physical release soon. Please?
