The animated tease is the most interesting part so far
So the unveiling of Sonic Frontiers gameplay didn’t really go as planned for Sega, but they did tease an interesting departure from the open world formula: animated story sequences. Thanks to a new Sonic Central stream, we got a small tease of Sonic Frontiers story details.
There’s two teases afoot, actually, both in the same day. One comes from the latest IGN video, which provides a snippet of the story:
“After flying into a wormhole with Tails and Amy, Sonic finds himself separated from his friends and all alone on an isolated island, with nothing but an AI voice guiding him to collect the Chaos Emeralds.”
So the obvious takeaways here are that Tails and Amy are a part of Frontiers, and that we possibly won’t get an overload of “friends.” Remember the tenuous original story tidbit shared by Sega back during the announcement, too, which was subsequently removed from Polygon’s report due to Sega deeming it “incorrect:”
“In Sonic Frontiers, Sonic’s long-time nemesis Dr. Eggman discovers an ancient technology on the Starfall Islands and installs his AI program SAGE to hack in and take over. But there is more to this technology than he realizes, and unintended consequences immediately come to bear. Sonic must race against time to discover the truth, save his friends, and maybe even save himself at the same time.”
The second recent tease comes via a short clip in the Sonic Central stream that’s literally just a few seconds, we see Knuckles at the top of the stairs seemingly guarding an emerald [probably the master]. The full short will be shared “later this year, prior to the release of Sonic Frontiers.” Remember, this story will be penned by Sonic comic writer Ian Flynn, and right now, it’s the most intriguing part of this new entry.
