The Sega Genesis was one of the top five best things ever invented in Japan. It ranks right up there with Godzilla movies and vending machines that dispense used panties for the sheer amount of our collective childhoods that members of my generation devoted to it.
A huge part of the success and massive love for this venerable old system was the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Well before Sonic was being voiced by Urkel in some stupid kid’s cartoon, he was the epitome of that early-90s “TO THE XTREME” culture. As the family-friendly counterpart to the grunge movement, Sonic was the gaming figurehead for everything that Kurt Cobain stood for in the music world, minus the heroin addiction and the cough-syrup-and-methadone-freak wife.
As you can probably tell, my generation still has a candle lit in the window for the pre-3D Sonic games; the ones that didn’t suck.
Enter Sonic Megamix.
The above video is from a homebrew game called Sonic 1 Megamix that is the first entry in a series of games designed by Team Megamix, all of whom have that same kind of nostalgia for the good ole’ days that I exhibited above, only they also have way more talent. The game takes the original levels of the first Sonic the Hedgehog and spices them up with two additional playable characters, moves from more recent games in the series and free porn!
You’ll never see this game on any real system, as Sega would probably murder Team Megamix if given the chance, but you can download it from the forum thread here. It’s a hack for an original Sonic the Hedgehog rom, so if you know how to make that sort of thing clap, go for it. We are bound by moral obligations (and because we don’t want to be sued) to tell you that you shouldn’t forego real consoles for emulation, but if you happened to stumble across an emulator and a rom some place on the internet (Like maybe Google … have you tried Google? Just use Google, jerk.) that would be between you and your god (and his lawyers).
