Sonic the Hedgehog and cute animation have always gone hand-in-hand, but the various web shorts of recent years have been particularly charming, capturing the dynamic world of The Blue Blur with a colorful and heartfelt eye to its characters and universe. Case in point: This new short from Sega, released to market the upcoming remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Rise of the Wisps is a two-part animation that features Tails, Dr. Robotnik, Sonic himself, and the cutesy beings known as “Wisps”, that feature in the 2010 Nintendo DS/Wii release. What starts out as a simple storybook tale becomes a real-life mission for Sonic — delightfully portrayed with an amusing arrogance by the returning Roger Craig Smith. Oh, there’s also a surprise appearance by another classic Sonic villain. But why not just check the short out for yourself?

The second part of Rise of the Wisps will be released at later date, likely in line with Sonic Colors: Ultimate‘s arrival on September 7. The remaster will see Sonic once again fight through the hazardous amusement park of Dr. Robotnik to save the Wisps and put an end to his nemesis’ latest scheme. Sonic Colors: Ultimate will feature updated visuals, new animations, a remixed soundtrack, and an optional “Navigation Mode”, which will allow Tails to help out Sonic (and the player) with tips, and even joining him on the battlefield for when things get a little too hard to handle.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate launches on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Epic Games Store) September 7.
