Hey, you wanted a new game, right?
A brand new, officially licensed Sonic the Hedgehog game has been launched within digital game builder Roblox. Sonic Speed Simulator sees the iconic Sega superstar burning rubber through a series of recognizable locales, faithfully recreated within the Roblox universe.
The new game-within-a-game was developed by Gamefam, a studio dedicated to creating interactive Roblox experiences, and has the official backing of no less than Sega itself. Players can race through four famous zones from the Sonic franchise, and unlock skins for additional characters such as Tails and Knuckles. In addition, Sonic-themed avatar items have been made available, including adoptable Chao Pets.
While Sonic Speed Simulator is not the first time Roblox has teamed with a popular brand for in-game escapades, this new title does represent the first time that a recognizable, licensed character has officially crossed over into the Roblox universe. Perhaps, much like Fortnite, Roblox Corporation will be looking to add more pop culture figures to its universe in the future, hoping to draw even more players to its staggering, ever-expanding userbase, which currently sits at an estimated 170 million global users.
Away from Roblox, Sega is currently preparing Sonic’s next mainline release Sonic Frontiers, which is expected to launch later in 2022. Over on the big screen, Paramount Pictures Sonic the Hedgehog 2 recently achieved the biggest ever opening weekend for a video game movie. It’s certainly been a fine year so far for The Blue Blur, one that is, hopefully, set to run and run… pun fully intended.
