Sony: No trophies on PSP

Recommended Videos

I have been fairly critical of Sony’s Trophy system in the past, but that’s mostly because they have a vast amount of potential that hasn’t been realized. Take the PSP for example — had Sony shared the Trophy system between its handheld and the PS3, something really interesting could have happened. Sadly, however, Sony is Sony, and this is never going to be.

“You’re not going to see Trophies on the PSP,” explains PSN director Eric Lempel. Well, that’s one good idea buggered.

Lempel explains that piracy is a huge part of the reason why Trophies aren’t coming to PSP: “If people can artificially inflate their rankings and amounts of Trophies, it kills the whole Trophy system.” According to Lempel, “keeping it secure, keeping it fair” is the order of the day, meaning that no Trophies will ever come to handhelds.

While I can see where they’re coming from, it’s still rather stupid. People have artificially inflated their Gamerscores on Xbox Live, but MS used its own network service to track them down. All Sony would have to do is require players to be logged into PSN to view their Trophies on the PSP and they have them. Besides which, I thought the PSP GO was going to curb piracy. Evidently, Sony isn’t very confident in the security of its new system if it won’t add Trophies to it.

Yet another good idea squandered. Oh well, I’ll just continue to not give a stuff about PSN identities.
