Siding with the Parisians instead

In early August, hundreds of thousands of people will descend upon Cologne, Germany for gamescom, the largest videogame trade show on the planet. Publishers and platform owners will have plenty to announce with all game enthusiasts as a captive audience. Many will even hold elaborate press conferences to relay their news.

For the first time since 2009, Sony and PlayStation won’t be part of that group. Sony revealed today that it’s forgoing a gamescom press conference this year. In a statement to GameSpot, Sony’s reasoning for the decision is that “With the changes this year of E3 taking place a week later and gamescom taking place earlier, we feel that both PlayStation and the wider industry would benefit from a major news milestone later in the year, during the most important period for gaming.”

Instead of gamescom, Sony seems as if it’ll be focusing its attention on Paris Games Week. The publisher announced that it’ll hold an international media briefing there. The France-based show looks as if it’s quickly gaining steam, as there were more than a quarter million attendees last year. In 2015, Paris Games Week will take place the week of October 26.

Just because Sony won’t hold a gamescom presser doesn’t mean it won’t have a presence at the convention. It’ll still likely have a large booth with a bunch of upcoming games. It’s just that it’s saving the pomp and circumstance that comes alongside a full-blown show for later in the year.
