Following Spider-Man 2‘s successful launch last week, PlayStation has revealed just how impactful the game was. In the first 24 hours alone, the game sold over 2.5 million copies. This makes it the fastest-selling title from PlayStation’s first-party studios.
Numbers from the UK are also impressive. GameIndustry.biz reveals that Spider-Man 2 clenched the top spot when it comes to physical sales in the UK, surpassing Super Mario Bros Wonder. It also had 5% greater sales than Hogwarts Legacy on PS5. Overall, it is the 4th biggest physical launch in the UK this year, surpassed by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, EA Sports FC24, and Hogwarts Legacy on all platforms.
Spider-Man 2‘s success is a product of some wise choices made by Sony over the years. It purchased the Spider-Man IP from Marvel in 1999 for $7 million which has turned out to be an incredibly advantageous move. Years later, Sony then tapped Insomniac to develop a new Spider-Man game, leading to the PS4 game. Not long after the studio was purchased by Sony for $229 million.
Insomniac has proven itself yet again, but the studio isn’t ready to sleep yet. Superhero fans can also look forward to Wolverine which is currently in development.
