Perhaps the studio that revived Kid Icarus flew too close to greatness, Andriasang reports that Project Sora has melted away after the release of its first and only game. According to its official website, the developer closed up shop on June 30th with the webpage itself set to disappear at the end of the month.
The Nintendo subsidiary was originally founded back in 2009 following the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Its leader, Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai, resigned from Nintendo’s HAL Laboratories four years earlier but continues to work for the platform holder under the banner of his personal freelance design company, Sora Ltd.
Given that Sakurai previously stated that there are no plans for Kid Icarus Uprising sequel and his involvement with the upcoming Namco-developed Smash Bros. title, perhaps this news isn’t entirely out of the blue but it’s unfortunate nevertheless. It’s unclear what has happened to Project Sora’s employees, but I sincerely hope that they’ve found work at Nintendo’s other internal studios.
