Like a Motley Crue video, except awesome
There was a time when my highest aspiration in life was to draw my own 2D fighting game. As I got older, I discovered that without the utmost talent, patience, and dedication, it was never going to happen (which is why it hasn’t happened for me… yet).
That’s where we’re different from this week’s guest on Sup, Holmes?. Mariel Cartwright has made her own 2D fighting game (working as lead animator in collaboration with past Sup Holmes guest Mike Z and a variety of other artists and designers). That makes her an art god in my book. That her game features a nun who transforms into disgusting pile of violent intestines/arms/eyeballs and a cat girl with a detachable head is just the icing on god-flavored cake.
Mariel’s worked on plenty of other games that I’ve loved, including Anna Anthropy‘s Lesbian Spider Queens from Mars, Scott Pilgrim, the Silent Hill series, and loads of others. She’s also a master of re-appropriating established brands in decidedly strange and sexy ways. Her re-imagining Generation 5 Pokemon into NSFW topless ladies (in collaboration with fellow Mechafetus artist Paul Robertson) is my definition of genius.
We’ll be talking to Mariel about all that, how she got into game development, what games she’d like to work on next, how she feels about allegations that Skullgirls‘s sometimes sexually charged designs are harmful to women, and whatever she wants to rap about.
