Surprise: Nintendo thinks it did well during the holidays

Breaking: Nintendo believes it sold a lot of stuff during the holidays.

Ahead of the January NPD numbers, Nintendo tossed out a press release with its own sales estimates for the month of December. And as we gathered without looking at its contents, it appears as though Nintendo performed well.

The publisher believes that Wii sales exceeded 3 million units during the month, while the DS and DSi will “set a new all-time calendar-year US sales record” for handheld systems. On the software side, Nintendo is estimating that Super Mario Brothers Wii has almost reached 4 million lifetime sales in the US.

For the last few years Christmas has been all about giving Wiis, which is great by the way. We’d much rather have a few extra consoles in our closet than those knitted sweaters with bright green dinosaurs across the chest.
