Target, you bungled this entire operation
Things haven’t been looking good for Nintendo and its retailer-exclusive amiibo initiative. Toys”R”Us has bungled pre-orders so many times it’s hard to tell if anyone will actually get their Lucario amiibo at this point. Best Buy didn’t open pre-orders for its exclusive until weeks after the announcement. Target’s Rosalina pre-order process has been completely fucked, especially in Canada, where residents weren’t even allowed to pre-order.
Now, Target has announced it’s closing all 133 of its Canadian stores because it will be impossible to reach profitability. A concrete closing date hasn’t been set, but employees will be given 16 weeks severance at a minimum — I’m glad they got something. What does this mean for the Rosalina amiibo? It’s likely the store will halt, or at the very least, be light on shipments. If you’re Canadian and were hoping to rush into Target to get your hands on one, you really should think about importing it from an international Amazon venue or a Japanese import site.
A Nintendo representative recently stated in a Reddit AMA that “retailer exclusives will be around as long as stores put the money up for them.” At this point, I don’t blame anyone for completely giving up on these toys.
