It’s been a while since I’ve seen an honest to goodness fighting game rivalry. There was the faux trash talk between the Tekken 6 and Street Fighter IV devs from late last year, but that was all just to promote Street Fighter X Tekken. I don’t think I’ve seen fighting game devs really talk smack about each other’s game since the Eternal Champions/Mortal Kombat II/Street Fighter II days.
Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but I’m happy to see the genuine return of fighting game developers dogging each others games. It’s far from bloodthirsty, but to hear Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi say…
“(Street Fighter is) originally and now a 2D fighting game. But, for us, Dead or Alive is a 3D fighting game – so [Capcom has] a limitation with Street Fighter. As a 3D fighting game we have a lot of possibility, and it is natural to convey it to 3DS… (Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition) has a figurine battle. We are in the fighting game genre, and they’re not fighting!”
… still has me smiling. I wonder if he thinks that statements like that will actually convince some people to buy Dead or Alive Dimensions over Super Street Fighter IV 3D?
Are you convinced?
