So Diablo III has been out for the past week, accrued over six million sales, and generated a ton of controversy. Many millions of players clearly love the game and refuse to let the problems get in the way of their fun. Others have been pissed off by the DRM and balancing issues, but still maintained it’s enjoyable. Then there are those who have had a hardline, “Screw this game” stance.
The most controversial aspect of the game may prove to be the Real Money Auction House, in which players can exchange their cash for loot. We’ve already seen how it works with the in-game currency, though the opportunity to use actual dollars seems to be a ways away. As for what we have now, do you believe it’s a bold new step for the series, or something that’s killed the fun of finding loot for yourself? Is it an improvement, or an undermining setback?
Personally, I find the current auction house somewhat interesting. I kind of like the way you can share loot for gold, especially when I make a decent sale myself. That said, I have a feeling that, once the best items are inevitably locked behind real money, I’ll politely stop playing. I’m not into the idea of freemium models in games that carry an MSRP, and I don’t quite fancy dancing to Blizzard’s tune on that. I’ve had my fun for the initial price. I just feel like buying as much as possible with in-game gold while I still can, since I’ve a feeling the real cash will take pride of place once it’s implemented.
That’s just me. What about you? Do you like the Auction House, or do you wish it never existed? We must know!
