‘Get yo drank on,’ Drake
The Uncharted 4 beta is now live, and set to run until December 13.
After it launched I was able to get in immediately, and was plopped into an intro section that showed off the new engine, as well as a few pointers for the multiplayer component. In short, it’s the same Uncharted you know and love (or hate), with a grappling hook mechanic that can be used on select locations. For the most part I’m actually okay with this, as the third-person cover shooting conceit still holds up.
As for the multiplayer itself, players can acquire in-game cash inside of a match by killing players, assisting their team, or locating treasure littered across the map. By pressing the DualShock 4’s touchpad, you’ll bring up a screen of power-ups that can be instantly purchased and used, like the power to summon a minion, or a magical spell. It’s kooky but it works, mostly because of how diverse the abilities actually are — like a giant totem pole that shoots out fireballs.
You can watch the tutorial for yourself in the video above, and skip to 3:20 for all of the menu junk, like the storefront, skins, taunts, loadouts, skills, and what have you. It’s…okay so far. I played a bit of multiplayer from 2 and 3, but I never really got into all that much — I don’t see that changing here outside of a fleeting bit of fun. To check out the beta for yourself, you need a copy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for the PS4.
As of a few minutes ago though, there are some “session errors” being reported — likely from a flood of people getting in after they realized it was live. Sony also will be reporting downtime on the official forums. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes. For now you can just watch the tutorial over and over, haha.
