And the most-played
As we inch toward the new year, Valve has shared a list of the 100 best-selling games on Steam in 2018. Along with the general list, there are also a few more specific groupings including the top 150 new releases, VR best-sellers, Early Access success stories, and the most-played Steam games.
If you thought the beginning of the year felt particularly crowded for games, the “top new release” charts agree. As Valve notes, “December is a busy month and a lot of activity to compete with, so it’s understandable that it might be a less desirable month to release in. But April only had 5 releases that made our list and July only had 6, whereas February was the busiest month with 22 popular releases.”
I’m also fascinated by the most-played list, which features 10 games that resonated enough to bring in over 100,000 simultaneous players. Those are: Dota 2, Warframe, Realm Royale, Monster Hunter World, Counter-Strike: GO, Team Fortress 2, Path of Exile, PUBG, Grand Theft Auto V, and Rainbow Six Siege.
Meanwhile, the best-selling Steam games were tracked by gross revenue, and it’s no surprise to see certain older games like Dead by Daylight still making the cut in 2018. Topping the list were Warframe, Far Cry 5, The Elder Scrolls Online, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Civilization VI, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Monster Hunter World, PUBG, and Counter-Strike: GO.
For the full individual lists, just follow those links up top. And don’t beat yourself up too much if you own more of this stuff than you should and your backlog is only getting bigger. Happens to the best of us.
