These Mario Kart toys actually use power-ups!

Tomy has released a new line of Mario Kart toys in Japan that may very well race to the top of any importer’s “DO WANT” list. At first they don’t look too special — just another set of remote controlled cars. However, using the power of SCIENCE, these toys are able to take each other out in virtual style.

Each car periodically obtains a power-up which lights up on the remote control. The cars themselves have infrared sensors, allowing them to use these invisible shells and bananas on each other. Those vehicles affected will rumble and temporarily slow down. If that does not amaze you, then you are too cynical for life.

They cost around $30 to buy from Japan, excluding import costs. If Tomy ever deigns to make a Drybones, I am all over it.
