Total Chaos is an open-world survival horror mod for Doom II

Wad’a’Holic’s total conversion isn’t the Doom II you remember

One of my favorite things about PC gaming has to be the vibrant modding scene. It seems that creative modders are always coming up with something new and unexpected to do to our favorite titles. Whether it’s a painstakingly meticulous re-envisioning of the beloved Half-Life in the Black Mesa conversionto the redonkulous addition of “Macho Man” Randy Savage in Bethesda’s Skyrim; the only limiting factor here is the modder’s skill and imagination.

As you can see from the video above, the Total Chaos mod for Doom II by Sam Prebble, aka Wad’a’Holic, is no exception. Prebble writes that Total Chaos is a “total conversion mod for Doom II that runs on the source ports GZDoom and Zandronum” with the express intent to show “how far we could push modding and transform the game into something we thought would be impossible.”

Needless to say, what’s on display here doesn’t remotely resemble the Doom II that I’m familiar with. Total Chaos doesn’t just look completely different from the game it derives from, the gameplay itself is a complete departure from id’s ground-breaking FPS, as there are no guns in the title at all. Rather than relying on firepower to survive in Prebble’s open-world survival horror mod, “players must use their wits and the island’s hazards to defend themselves.” As shown in the teaser, melee weapons can be crafted from items found in the game, but the creator warns that “close combat is not recommended.”

According to Prebble, the project is just past the halfway point with the majority of the core systems in place, but he states that “there is still a lot of work to be done.” If you like what you’ve seen and want to follow the project on your own, you can do so on Sam’s ModDB page, here.
