Traveler’s Tales: Natal will suck, Sony Wiimote won’t

Traveler’s Tales director Jon Burton has been chatting about motion controllers recently, casting judgement upon the “me too” offerings of Microsoft and Sony. The director believes that Project Natal will most likely cause development problems due to its inherent lag, while the Sony Wiimote shall provide superior motion control.

“[Natal is] exceedingly clever, but the lag on the input and lack of physical buttons is really going to restrict the kind of games that can be done with it”, he says. “Sony’s solution will be cheap, accurate and will put buttons at your fingertips, meaning everything from action adventures to FPSes can be handled with the same input.”

Despite believing Natal’s scope is limited, he does admit that the technology behind it is amazing: “To be able to take effectively a bump-map of a person and turn that into a fully articulated and rigged polygonal skeleton is an incredible feat. We run a mo-cap studio and to get anything resembling mo-cap, live in real-time, from effectively a single camera is nothing short of amazing.”

What do you think? Will Project Natal be too laggy for most games, and will the Wiimote come out on top? Personally, I just want the whole silly fascination with motion control to end.
