Epic unveiled its new free-to-use (with eventual royalties) pricing model for Unreal Engine 4 this week during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, while Unity launched the new iteration of its engine, Unity 5, with a fine mustachioed gentleman chilling on a couch.
Well done, Unity.
The pricing and features for the new engine are broken down here. In short: Unity 5 Personal Edition is free (with no royalties) for “professional developers, indies, hobbyists, and studios with revenue under $100,000 and funding under $100,000”; Unity 5 Professional Edition is sticking with a $75 per month subscription fee, or $1,500 for a perpetual license. Love this competition.
