Virtual reality helmet uses Kinect to twist your world up

The yellow, angle-headed dude with the glove may look funny, but he’s doing something really cool with virtual reality tech, and it’s powered by Microsoft’s Kinect sensor. 

Designer Maxence Paranche calls this his HyperReality system. It uses a Microsoft Kinect to scan the physical environment and display it in this funky helmet. The glove? That lets you rotate the visual angle any way you like, making for something that would feel like being able to freely control the angle of the camera in a video game, but in your real world.

Don’t expect real-world visuals in the helmet, though. What the Kinect sees is output in monochrome dots in this helmet. This world is manipulated via the force-sensor equipped glove. The experience doesn’t look like much in the video that you’ll find after the jump, but I bet it’s a trip to try for yourself.

Paranche says that his HyperReality system is ideal for art exhibits. He’s already done test runs at the Geffrye Museum and The Last Tuesday Society, says Fastcodesign. I’m surprised users aren’t running into things with the helmet on.
