Vision Gran Turismo: from people who love cars

Concepts galore in new racer

Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi explained in a behind-closed-doors meeting at gamescom that the first Gran Turismo game had the tag line “For all people who love cars.” They’ve played with that line a bit for their upcoming project, Vision Gran Turismo. Now the tag line is “From people who love cars, for people who love cars.”

The worlds of real racing and virtual racing cross over in Vision Gran Turismo, a project kicked off to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the franchise. The idea was to approach designers from the automotive world and beyond to design new cars to be put into a game. Yamauchi said that he asked around early on, and that more than they initially expected provided concept models for Vision Gran Turismo.

In this meeting we saw concept designs from many major design houses, including Alfa Romero, Aston Martin, Audi, Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, GM Design, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and more. Even Nike and Jordan (of Air Jordan fame) are providing original concepts.

Yamauchi seemed excited to share that while all concepts will be unveiled in their game, there’s a real possibility that some concepts will be brought to life by some of the manufacturers.

Things are still early for Vision Gran Turismo, though. Yamauchi admits that they have yet to decide on DLC formats or how they’ll be provided.

I’m sure fellow car nuts will agree Vision Gran Turismo is an exciting project. I’m hoping we see a PS4 release before long.
