‘But it would’ve taken too long’
It’s games like Zeus that have me not writing off entire concepts, no matter how tired they may appear on the surface. As described during senior producer Greg Donovan’s Game Developers Conference talk “Volition’s Challenge: Defining Project Vision” and recapped by Shacknews, this PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game would have been a modern Western in a post-apocalyptic Rio.
Players would have journeyed through an open world primarily on foot and knowing Volition’s history (Saints Row, Red Faction), yeah, that could’ve been cool.
“Right or wrong, we know we could’ve made this game,” Donovan said at GDC. “But it would’ve taken too long … It wouldn’t have been the responsible thing to do.”
Although Zeus won’t see light of day, the experience Volition gained while working on it will move forward into a new “top secret” project that’s currently in production at the studio.
