And it stole the show for me
Those who predicted that Watch Dogs would be a next generation title can feel vindicated this evening, as Ubisoft’s upcoming game was shown off on PlayStation 4 in a new live demo, showing protagonist Aiden Pearce wandering through the streets of Chicago.
As Pearce slowly makes his way through the bustling urban environment, he scans random passers-by, bringing up their personal information, hacks an ATM, and follows a young woman. The city looks great, but the real draw was watching Pearce play with his toys.
He follows the aforementioned woman to a car park, where she is accosted by a rough looking fellow. Pearce draws his gun and ducks behind a car, watching the scene unfold. The man starts to get violent, and Pearce reacts.
Immediately things ramp up. Shots are fired, and the man flees, with Pearce giving chase. As he sprints down the road, he listens in on the woman calling the police, alerting him to the impending threat.
As he gets closer to his quarry, he causes a CCTV camera in an alley way to explode, and in the chaos manages to tackle the thug and brutally beat him with his nightstick. With the fella down for the count, Pearce then attempts to escape the cops.
His gadgets really came into play here, with Pearce making barriers on the street raise, causing a cop car smash dramatically into it. He takes out the tires of another car before sprinting off again, climbing up buildings to get away from street level.
Finally, he uses his all-powerful phone to make a train break right in front of him, which he climbs on top of to escape his pursuers. The whole thing was both visually and mechanically impressive, and has me pretty damn excited about the title.
