Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Shibuya Incident anime arc is in full swing. However, it’s been some time since the first season and the film came out and, with that, some terms may not be familiar to some. One of the ones that have been ever present in JJK’s season two is ‘Curtain‘. So what exactly is a curtain and how does it work? Well, let’s dig in and find out.
NOTE: This is an anime-specific guide, so no spoilers for the manga will be discussed.
Curtain Call
Curtains or veils, to put it simply, are dome-shaped barriers that jujutsu sorcerers can create to conceal their actions. It also shrouds the inside into night, which makes cursed spirits come out of hiding. From there, sorcerers can exorcise spirits away from the public and maintain them in one space. However, creating a veil is a technique only some sorcerers can use. Notable examples include Gojo, Geto, and Mahito.
In order to summon a curtain, one must say the line “Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure.“. From there, a black substance will envelop the environment around them. Non-sorcerors can’t see the dome but regular sorcerors can. The technique can also be customized with talismans and binding vows to acquire different qualities. For example, one curtain can block sorcerers from getting in, while another can trap certain sorcerers (and non-sorcerors) inside.
An example of a curtain used in the anime is in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where Gojo uses one to help train Yuta, letting him take on a big cursed spirit. In the first season of the anime, Juzo creates a curtain to block Gojo from entering when attacking Jujutsu High. Currently, in season two, a veil surrounds a majority of Shibuya, trapping many non-sorcerors inside.
Well, that’s all you need to know about curtains in Jujutsu Kaisen! So next time you hear someone talk about them in the show, you’ll know what they mean. If you see one in real life, look for Gojo but don’t go after him. It won’t end well.
