The question of when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes place in relation to Cyberpunk 2077 is one that many fans had after watching the hit anime. Theories bounced around online, from the anime taking place during the events of the game to even a decade or more before. However, neither of those is the case, and we finally have a definitive answer.
When does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners take place?
It’s now confirmed that at least some of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes place in 2076, just one year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077.
The confirmation came from the game itself as Cyberpunk character Muamar “El Capitan” Reyes provides some additional info about the fate of the Edgerunners crew. Don’t worry. We won’t be spoiling anything here. So feel free to read on if you haven’t finished the show.
For game fans, you can see the proof for yourself by playing the missions that were added in the 1.6 “Edgerunners” update for Cyberpunk 2077.
While talking to El Capitan as part of the new missions after the 1.6 update, he will provide info about Edgerunners‘ protagonist, David, and makes reference to the fact that the events took place a year ago.
Specifically, El Capitan says in a text message, “Til bout a year ago when David kicked the hornets next.”
The timeline of events in the show is a little uncertain, but we can now say for sure that at least part of the anime takes place only a year before Cyberpunk 2077.
