Yacht Club has announced as part of their Yacht Club Presents stream that they’ll be releasing what is intended to be the definitive edition of the retro-inspired classic, Shovel Knight. Shovel Knight Shovel of Hope DX doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but it’s being announced the celebrate its anniversary. Let me just take a sip of tea while I read what anniversary it is. Ten years!?
That’s right, Shovel Knight was first released in June of 2014, back while I was still spritely and youthful. 10 years later, it’s still one of the best retro-inspired games you can find, a tribute to the Mega Man series with plenty of style of its own. It received DLC expansions over the years, as well as spin-offs such as Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon.
Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX will feature 20 playable characters and “fan-favorite features from all previous versions of the game,” including Challenge Stages, Custom Knight, and the Battle Ghost Arena. It will be adding modern retro conveniences such as save states, rewind, and online multiplayer functionality. Finally, there will be 300 “gameplay-twisting” cheats to change things up or make them weird.
One thing I’m not clear on is if this version will be included for people who own the all-encompassing Treasure Trove edition. The Yacht Club Presents stream mentions that the original version is on sale now. Except for Steam, Xbox One, and PS4, which should be soon.
Either way, their intention is for it to be their “way of preserving the game’s historical functionality, ensuring these elements remain available for future generations of players.”
Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX will be coming to Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime soon.
