Valve continues to give and give when it comes Team Fortress 2. Their latest experiment sees bot support for the frantic first person shooter. Beta testing is going on right now and you can go check out what the bots are like on three King of the Hill maps, koth_viaduct, koth_sawmill, and koth_nucleus. Since this is the beta, you’ll have to manually add the bots into your game using the console command. The Team Fortress 2 blog has details on how to do it.
Right now, the bots are pretty simple and can’t capture flags, capture points, or push carts. They can however kill you to death. The bots move and fire by using “virtual buttons”, respond in matches like a real player would and don’t cheat like the f**king bots in Perfect Dark 64 do.
Has anyone given this a try yet? Valve is looking for feedback on the bots and we’d like to hear what you think of the bots too. Also, be sure to check out the technical guide on the AI system Valve uses for those of you interested in that side of videogaming.
