Say it ain’t so, Lady Palutena! When asked point blank by IGN regarding a potential Kid Icarus: Uprising sequel, project head and famed Smash Brothers creator Masahiro Sakurai had this to say: “because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we’ll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years”.
Am I crazy in thinking that Nintendo should nurture more original properties in their lineup? It’s nice that the 2-3 Mario games per year are actually good, but I would personally enjoy mixing things up every so often. As it stands, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Star Fox games are very few and far between: now we can add poor Pit to the top of the pile. It’s a shame, because Kid Icarus: Uprising is one of my favorite games of the year, and one of my most treasured Nintendo games of all time.
I felt like it perfectly encapsulated that “feel good emotion” you get as a child when watching Beast Wars or Zoids on a lazy dog-dangling Saturday morning. It was charming, succinct, yet deep, and Nintendo actually did online multiplayer right for once. I for one hope that we get another Kid Icarus game before 25 years time — preferably a console title in the same vein as Uprising.
